The week (or two) that was

The spray man came out to spray 8 acres so we can start to think about lucerne planting.

The Mr got kicked by a horse.  He was bruised and sore but thankful that it was not worse.

Something died on the kids side of the house.  Colin pulled iron off the roof on the verandah, got up in the main roof, looked under the house but we couldn't find the offender.  Obviously the kids could not sleep in there, I could not even walk past the door without retching, so we moved their dressers into the kitchen and closed that part of the house up.  It still smells in there, but thankfully the kids are happy sleeping upstairs until I give it the all clear.  At least the rest of the house is smell free, with thanks to the plastic!

I am almost getting used to having two dressers in the kitchen.  At least this one keeps the kids off the plastic, not that they seem tempted to get on the other side.

We also need rain, everything has dried off and Summer seems to be hanging on.

To market, to market

The local cattle sale this week had us sell three head.

We had a good cow, who had a good heifer, but without a bull it would be easier for us to not have breeding stock to consider.  The steer went because he was big enough, we still have a couple of wethers running about so we didn't need meat and it is easier to justify the cost of transport if you sell more.

We only have one steer left now that was a bit small to sell (or eat).  He seems to have settled in well enough without his friends so touch wood he is happy to hang around without becoming a pain.  So far so good.

Jobs done

\

The former rabbit shed is now empty of anything rabbit related and being used as a feed room.  It is a big improvement as far as the shed is concerned and I love having somewhere stock proof and weather proof to put the feed.

The recent rains have made a few jobs move up on the 'to do' list.  The carport had ridge capping on the roof, but it was only held down by telecom rope and it had slipped to one side and let all the rain fall in.

The Mr soon found the reason why, the original beams had too big a spread on them for there to be anything to screw into, so he added another row as seen in the below photo.

Worked a treat, and now the ridge capping in screwed down as it should be.

More improvements made!

Rehoming Horses

Yesterday the new horses arrived.

The mare is 10yo, handled, but not broken in.
The foal is 2 months old.

Busy times ahead of us

Rabbit Shed

Once upon a time someone here bred rabbits in a serious way.  Not us, we don't even own one, so we are ripping everything out of this shed so we can use it to store the load of hay I just bought.

It seals well and has a good door on it which makes it a handy storage space.

Fence Repair

After the bigger than expected flood in November, we knew we would have to replace a fence line over the holidays.  I use the term 'we' lightly as my job was mostly in watching the children with a bit of 'sighting in' thrown in.

This is what sighting in looks like.  Staring down a row of fence posts making sure they are put in a straight line.  As an extra tip, don't wait till one is in and then change your mind and say it should have been an inch to the left, it won't win you any friends in that moment.

It was fun having a little helper for awhile.   He wasn't too happy to have pulled a gate over onto himself, insert parent fail, but he recovered after a cuddle.

I hope this fence does not wash away again in a hurry.
